Fashionably Whedon: costumes galore at Comic-Con

It used to be easy to recreate what a character wears in a Joss Whedon show. It wouldn’t take much to copy what Spike or Angel wears, or Buffy for that matter.

Ever since Firefly, that’s changed. I remember at the Browncoat Cruise to Mexico in 2007 that people took a lot of trouble to recreate Kaylee’s dress from “Shindig” or the fake medical uniform the crew had to wear in “Ariel.”

During Comic-Con 2009, among the most popular looks were from Dr. Horrible and Firefly, but for different reasons. In honor of the screening of the Emmy-nominated musical, a number of fans either dressed as Dr. Horrible, which takes lot of effort…

Or as Captain Hammer, which takes no more than getting his t-shirt and some heavy gloves.

The Bad Horse singer behind him has a trickier job, but has a good look, too.

Sometimes we see the two arch-enemies with a common goal…getting into the showing.

Your author, joining a 'flash mob' of Jayne-hats

My other favorite gathering was a fan activity scheduled for the third day of Comic-Con: people wearing Jayne hats were asked to show up outside Ballroom 20.

It’s one of those Flash Mobs the kids do. Now, just because I don’t do weird things because I’m 50, I figure I should be part of this…

Oh, and one of them is dressed like Illyria and wearing a Jayne hat. That’s dedication!

Next year, maybe we’ll see people dressed as Actives. Come to think of it, that may be the easiest costume to replicate…but who ever heard of a bald middle-aged Active?
